Footwear Size and Fit Information for E-commerce Brands
E-commerce buyers cannot try a shoe before ordering, so brands need explainable size and fit information. Copying another brand's chart or adding size-system labels does not establish the fit of your specific model. Treat the information as a product handover tied to approved samples, measurements and brand review.
This guide is for product, purchasing and merchandise teams. It does not provide a universal consumer chart, guaranteed fit or promised reduction in returns. The output is a model-specific record and approved publication version.
Define fields before filling numbers
Marked size, customer foot length, a product dimension and last information are different fields. Do not label them all length. Identify the object, unit, method and purpose. An insole measurement should not simply be renamed recommended foot length without an appropriate review of that use.
The public description of ISO 19407 identifies foot length as the basis for its size-conversion tables. This guide does not reproduce those tables or treat a standard's name as proof of model-specific fit, certification or universal market compliance.
A size-information handover table
| Field | Record | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Model baseline | Style, construction revision and approved sample | Not another model or old sample |
| Marked size | System, intended range and relevant context | Order, label and product information agree |
| Measured object | Foot, insole or defined product location | No ambiguous field name |
| Method | Endpoints, instructions, unit, date and checker | Another person can repeat the definition |
| Sample scope | Sample identity, checked range and open items | No unsupported shipment-wide conclusion |
| Fit observations | Sample, wearing conditions and specific location | Separate observation from measurement |
| Release version | Brand approval, page, label and support references | Changes are synchronized |
Make measurement records repeatable
Agree the required measurements and describe endpoints, product condition and units before collecting data. Use actual identified samples, not generated pictures, reference photos or a numerical label as a substitute. If the definition is unclear, resolve it before creating a precise-looking chart.
Record style, sample, size, date and checker. When values differ, check objects and methods before handling the result under the agreed requirements. Do not invent a universal tolerance. Confirm the scope for which sample information can be used and whether other sizes need review.
Write fit feedback with context
True to size or runs small gives little context alone. Identify the sample, marked size, wearing conditions and the location of tightness, looseness or contact. Collect only necessary information with appropriate permission; do not publish personal details.
A single wearer's impression is not a recommendation for every customer. Keep medical or corrective claims out of unverified product copy. The brand should review the evidence, covered model and wording before publishing fit advice.
An illustrative field mismatch
Imagine a spreadsheet column called length. Packaging assumes it means insole length while support assumes suitable foot length. This is a hypothetical workflow example, not actual measurement data or sizing advice. Ask the responsible person to define the object, endpoints and unit, identify the sample revision and remeasure if needed. Hold the field out of customer size advice until the brand approves its meaning and use.
Separate three information layers
- Internal evidence: retain method, sample references, original records and review notes.
- Customer information: publish approved fields, units, model coverage and necessary explanations.
- Support guidance: use the same version to explain the table and collect specific feedback.
English and Chinese must preserve the same measurement object, unit and basis, not merely translate column titles. A language change must not introduce an unapproved conversion or alter the product's dimensions.
Review changes before launch and repeat orders
A material, construction or approved-version change may require review of existing size information. An unchanged style name does not settle that question. Check the page, labels, packaging and inventory variants together, including the mobile presentation.
Coordinate with SKU and barcode handover and the sample-development process. Review purchasing size allocations separately from customer-facing size and fit information. Return to retail and e-commerce footwear solutions with the model's information and review needs.
